Last time out
The first test we had against the Lasses was at St Marys back in October, during the game the girls were quite dominant, we had a fair number of chances on goal, with most not amounting to anything. We were playing some very nice football, but we just weren’t playing fast enough, and getting caught in possession. Both Alice and Lucia worked very well in the middle together against a very physical side, will we see the same again this Sunday? The match ended 1-0 to us, with thanks to Ella Pusey putting one in the net, and we took the 3 points.
The last time we played Sunderland was back in February when we travelled away to their ground, the girls walked away with a clean sheet and also the 3 points. The game can only be described as a scintillating game of high intensity, pressured moves which was accompanied with a slickness and speed from both teams that meant a thrilling end to end game of football. A lot of the play from this game was built up with a lot of midfield battles, which was the same as the first game we played against them at home. So, we can expect that again on Sunday! The deadlock was broken late in the game, with Wilko scoring in the 79th minute after some really good movement from the team.
Looking ahead
We head into the match on Sunday with Saints sitting in 1st place in the table with 6 points, Sunderland 5th in the table with 4 points, just 2 points behind us. We come of the back off yet another dominating performance, with some excellent football against Blackburn Rovers, in which we won 2-0. Hopefully, the momentum from our very impressive win is what spurs us on and keeps that fire in our bellies to go for it again on Sunday, get another good few goals, collect the 3 points and remain at the top of the league.
Sunderland have made 6 signings in this transfer window consisting of, 1 defender, 1 forward and 4 midfielders. So, the Lasses have had a little shake up with their players, wonder how signing those few will impact their play. With Sunderland just coming off the back of beating Sheffield United 1 nil on their home turf, they’re going to want to carry on that run and will be gunning for those 3 points on Sunday, I expect it’s going to be a competitive match showing a lot of experience and skill.
Sunderland are known to be ‘wind up merchants’ and looking back at their recent game against Sheffield United, I can really see that. Sheffield were getting wound up at the constant playing around of the Lasses and even managed to pick up a red card, after launching the ball at a Sunderland player who nudged it away to waste time. So, I guess we need to be on the lookout for that.
Sunderland finished last season 2nd from bottom of the table, only keeping safe from relegation because of the 11-point gap between them and Coventry. They only won 6 games from the whole of the season last year.
One thing that I know for sure is that Saints are going to be looking for those 3 points on Sunday, after getting 3 points in the last 2 games we just know they’re going to be hungry for me and to stay at the top of the table. I’m looking forward to witnessing the beautiful styled, quick paced and skilled football that we’ve seen the last 2 matches, 3 points?! Let’s hope so! Good luck girls!
