All Saints Insider

Saints head up north to Ewood Park this Sunday!

This Sunday, Saints head away to Ewood Park for their match against Blackburn. It’s scary to say it, but this game marks the penultimate away game of the season, and everything is still looking very close at the top! After the performance and win against Reading in the league last week, let’s hope we keep that momentum and continue on with a dominating and exciting display from the get-go! Let’s all get behind the girls, cheer them on to a hopeful victory! If you can’t make it to the match then don’t your worry, you can keep up to date on the Saints FC women twitter and maybe also Saints Play.

Last time out

The last time we played Blackburn was back on home turf in September, we beat them 2 nil after a brilliant display and performance, as well as an amazing atmosphere. The team put on a confident and dominant display which was a very exciting watch. Admittedly, there was a few individual mistakes but that’s football, it happens and it’s how you recover from those mistakes what counts, and they recovered well. I was very impressed with the vision the team had in the build-up to potential goals and throughout the whole game, working as a solid team opposed to individual attempts. I must say too, the crosses into the box were beautiful but some of the times I think were too early and couldn’t connect.

The girls were playing very fast paced football and having good passages of play, a lot of the time the Blackburn players just couldn’t keep up, I really don’t think they troubled us that much. Our defence? Impeccable!

For the whole 90 minutes, they worked as a collective team, they always knew exactly where they needed to be and how each pass would be executed to them and how they would develop that play. Even with the subs, they come on and got stuck in straight away without taking time to warm in, they just knew exactly what they needed to do and went for it.

Looking ahead

We head into the match on Sunday with Saints sitting in 3rd place in the table with 33 points, Blackburn 7th in the table with 23 points, 10 points behind us. We come of the back of a spectacular 5-0 win against Reading at home. After the goal fest last week, let’s hope we carry the momentum from the last win and it pushes us on to fight for another 3 points on Sunday, get another good few goals, and remain heavily in the promotion battle. It’s very tight and nervy at the top of the table, very exciting to say the least though!

Blackburn have had a very on and off season thus far and have had their fair share of wins but also have lost a fair few at the same time! They’ve won 7, lost 8 and drew 2, so they are pretty even with their form from losses to wins. Blackburn have picked up 3 out of the 7 wins at home too. They have also scored 15 goals but have also conceded 25, which just goes to show they are very susceptible to letting one in, they’ve conceded 14 of the 25 goals at home too! Let’s hope to add to that on Sunday!

Blackburn have had quite a good run-on form as of late too, catching 2 draws and also a win. One of those draws happened to be Birmingham, who have now entered back into the promotion race. Its all very close at the top.
