This Sunday, Saints head away to Westleigh Park as we face our rivals, Portsmouth, in the third round of the FA Cup! The match will kick off at 2pm. It’s been a long international break, and I cannot wait to be able to witness the Saints play, and whats a better match back than the huge South Coast Derby! Let’s get as many of us Saints fans their as possible to bring that noise and get behind the girls to hopeful victory! Can’t make the game? Don’t worry, BBC Radio Solent will be doing live commentary, as well as the Saints website itself!
Last time out
Last time out was the game where we lifted the trophy after beating Pompey 2-0 and winning the National League Southern Premier Division – the game that saw us head to and win the play offs! The match played out to what was nearly a goalless first half until Sophia Pharoah lifted the roof off the stadium, with a brilliant shot from outside the area! That wasn’t it though, Lucia Kendall then unleashed her magic shortly after the break! The scoreline stayed put until the final whistle, where a crowd of 5,145 roared in celebration!
We had previously faced Pompey twice before once in the league and once in the cup that season, before the league winning match at St Mary's, both of these games ended with us winning by just 1 goal! One of these conveniently was the FA Cup, played at you guessed it, Westleigh Park where we come out 2-1 winners in extra time! Pompey scored first in this match in the 31st minute, with Saints taking half an hour to equalise! Lucia Kendall scored in the 65th minute header and the game went to extra time, Caitlin Morris scored in the 111th minute to see us win and go through to the next round where we played Ipswitch.
Same again this Sunday!? Let’s hope so!!
Looking ahead
Looking ahead to Sunday, Pompey are a team that Saints know very well, not just because of the rivalry between us. We know that it’s going to be a tough battle and we also know that there is going to be a lot of fans, from both sides that are going to be loud to spur the teams on! Pompey have been doing exceptionally in the Southern Premier and they currently sit first in the table, with a +42-goal difference, which goes to show that they definitely know where the goal is!
Pompey also now have 3 very very familiar players within their ranks, one of those being Georgie Freeland who we all know is an exceptional baller who has scored a lot of goals in a Saints shirt! Not only her but they also have Leeta Rutherford who we know is a rock and midfield & Beth Lumsden who is truly banging them in for fun!
We also head into the game after 2 very successful and dominating matches, one in which saw us beat Crystal Palace 4-3 and the other which ended with us losing 2-1 to Arsenal. I must say we are all proud of their performance against Arsenal.
I’m really hoping those last two matches carry over and we dominate Pompey completely, get the win and go into the hat for the next round!
COME ON YOU REDS❤️🤍
