Writer's picture: SHANNON STEPHENSHANNON STEPHEN

This Sunday, Saints head back home to the fortress, that is St Marys, as they face Sheffield United. Kick-off is at 2pm and we cannot wait to get back in the stadium to watch our girls! The match comes after the recent international break, which saw 6 out of the team go and represent their countries! Get on down to the stadium and cheer on the girls as they hopefully bag those 3 points! If you can’t make the match, don’t you worry as the game will be streamed on Saints Play for FREE!

Southampton FC Women face Sheffield United Women on Sunday 5th November (2pm) in the Women's Championship.

Last time out

The first time we played Sheffield United was back in October last year, I sadly didn’t make it to this game as work was calling. I’ve read comments about the game though and shocker , the ref was appalling! (better to come we hope). The good thing about the match was that we had a very strong defence which is always great! The downside was that we lacked in the creating chances, which we tended to struggle with a lot last season. Not to worry though, in the 7th minute Ella Pusey scored the only goal of the game which saw us get the 3 points.

The second time we faced them was in April and we were back at home, this match also happened to be the last game of the season. This game didn’t end the way we’d all want, with Sheffield bagging the 3 points after a 1-0 win. We were quite patchy in this game, with Sheffield being a lot more ‘street wise’ than we were. That being said though, we did play very well, we again just failed to take the chances that we had. Sheffield are a very strong team and it definitely showed in this match. We would have scored but after a very nicely team worked goal, it was ruled offside.

Looking ahead

We head into the match on Sunday with Saints sitting in 2nd place in the table with 15 points, Sheffield United 8th in the table with 10 points, only 5 points behind us! We come of the back of an unfortunate loss to London City Lionesses, where we lost 1-0, though we had 2 disallowed goals, one of which I don’t think was. Hopefully, the frustration of losing this match, pushes us on to get back to winning ways against The Blades this weekend.

Sheffield United added a fair few additions to their squad in the transfer window, I’m intrigued to see how different they face up this Sunday, to how they faced us last season. As we know, they are quite a big and strong team, will we see the same strength and physicality this time? Sadly, The Blades also had the devastating news that the brilliant, long serving player; Maddy Cusack, sadly passed away last month. Rest in peace Maddy🕊

Sheffield United have been having an average season thus far, losing three but also winning 3, they have also drawn 1. They’ve racked up a total of 9 goals but have conceded 10, going to show that they can score but they are also susceptible to letting one in too!

Four of those goals coming from their 4-0 loss to Birmingham. Let’s hope Saints can see through Sheffield and we can add to their conceded tally, and bag those three points this weekend!

Last season, Sheffield United finished 8th in the Championship. The Blades picked up a total of 27 points over the season, scoring 32 goals and also conceding 25.

One thing I can say for sure is that I am really looking forward to being back at St Marys this Sunday, after playing at Snows Stadium for the two previous home matches!! Let’s bring that noise!! Good luck to our Saints and let’s hope we bring those 3 points home!!!
