This Sunday, Saints head back home to St Marys for their match against Blackburn Rovers. The match will kick off at 2pm but get yourself down to the stadium early! There will be a meet and greet in the Gasworks bar at 1pm and will last 15 minutes. Can’t get there for that time? Don’t you worry because the same will be happening after the match too! With it being the first home game of the season, it would be amazing to see as many of you there as possible, supporting the girls and cheering them on, bring that noise! If you can’t make it to the match Sunday, it will be streamed live on the FA Player.
Last time out
The first time Saints met Blackburn was back in November, you guessed it, it was pouring down and absolutely freezing! The girls put on a very dominant display throughout the whole match but Blackburn proving hard to breakdown with also that common occurrence last season of struggling to find that clinical final third shot. There were two goals in this match, both coming in the second half, where Blackburn did come out with more fight! Wilko was the
goalscorer for us in the 57th minute, but rovers equalised in the 85th. There was a few ‘fouls’ that weren’t fouls in this match.
The last time we played them was at the fortress, St Marys, again; just like the first, it ended in a draw. Unfortunately, I was unable to attend this match due to commitments that I couldn’t change. Reading back at comments regarding the match from other fans, it seems to be that we were ‘robbed’ of the match, with the ref not playing the advantage or blowing the whistle too late when we were through on goal. Although with us having the better exchange just lacking the cutting edge. It seems we were too slow with the attacking approach too, deciding to go square or backwards which allowed Blackburn time to set up and break us down.
Looking ahead
We head into the match on Sunday with Saints sitting in 1st place in the table with 3 points, Blackburn are also on 3 points after their recent win over Birmingham, but goal difference sees us sitting pretty at the top. We come of the back off an amazing away win to Lewes in which we won 4-1. Hopefully, the momentum from our very impressive win is what spurs us on and keeps that fire in our bellies to go for it again on Sunday, get another good few goals, collect the 3 points and remain at the top of the league.
Blackburn have made 5 signings in this transfer window consisting of, 2 defenders, 2 forwards and one midfielder. So, Blackburn have had a little shake up with their players, wonder how signing those few will impact their play. With Rovers just coming off the back of beating league favourite 1 nil at home, so they’re going to want to carry on that run and will be gunning for those 3 points on Sunday, I expect it’s going to be a competitive match showing a lot of experience and skill.
Saint, from looking at Lewes are squad that want to score goals and they have finally been given the ‘license’ to do so. Putting Lewes to the sword by 4 goals to one last weekend, where Lewes had to score a worldie to get a goal. This just goes to show the massive show of intent and if that doesn’t make the league stand up and take notice, then they don’t know ball.
Looking back at last season, Blackburn finished 10th in the table with a total of 23 points. They scored 20 goals and conceded 29!
One thing I can say for sure is that I am seriously looking forward to the match Sunday, after witnessing the beautiful style of team based and fast paced football that the girls played recently.
